European Airlines Should ‘Cope with Demands’ for Summer 2023

As the summer travel season approaches, European airlines are gearing up to “cope” with the increased demand for flights, following the easing of travel restrictions across the continent. Industry experts predict that the summer months will see a significant rise in passenger numbers compared to previous years, as travelers look to make the most of newfound freedom and opportunities for leisure trips.

Last summer saw a mass of flight cancellations by major carriers as some of the continent’s key destinations, including London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol and Frankfurt, had to enforce daily passenger caps. This year, capacity caps are likely to be the “exception”, according to ACI Europe.

British Airways Chief Executive Sean Doyle expresses his confidence there will not be a repeat of last summer’s congestion and cancellations at Heathrow:

“Last year was not straightforward…but we’ve come a long way very quickly. Resourcing and operability are in a much better shape than last year.” He added that the airline had embarked on its largest recruitment campaign last year, hiring over 7,500 people.

To accommodate this surge in demand, major European airlines are expanding their flight schedules, increasing capacity, and implementing new routes to popular holiday destinations. These efforts are expected to minimise travel disruptions and ensure a smoother travel experience for passengers. Travelers are encouraged to plan and book their summer holidays early to secure the best deals and availability.
