Airlines Enhance Passenger Experience with Free Inflight Connectivity

Soaring Connectivity: Malaysia Airlines

In a move that sets new standards in the aviation industry, Malaysia Airlines has recently expanded its inflight wifi provision to all passengers, regardless of cabin class or loyalty tier. Initially available on 20 selected A350, A330-200, and A330-300 aircraft, the service will be gradually extended to other planes in the fleet.

The airline's decision to offer free wifi follows the successful provision of the service to Business Suite, business class, and Enrich Platinum passengers earlier this year. The previous data cap of 100 MB per sector has been removed, allowing passengers to enjoy unlimited data and stay connected throughout their journey.

Messaging Above the Clouds: Lufthansa

Not to be outdone, Lufthansa has announced plans to offer free inflight messaging to customers on short and medium-haul flights from mid-January 2024. Passengers on A320 Family aircraft with wifi connectivity will be able to send and receive an unlimited number of messages, including photos, on their smartphones or tablets.

In addition to this, Lufthansa plans to reduce the cost of other inflight internet packages, including streaming, by almost 50 per cent. This move is part of a larger trend, with an increasing number of airlines introducing free inflight messaging.

Finnair's Inflight Messaging Revolution

Finnair has also joined the inflight connectivity revolution by introducing complimentary inflight messaging. From November 2, 2023, all Finnair Plus members can send and receive free text-based messages via platforms like WhatsApp, iMessage, Viber, Kakao Talk, and WeChat on European flights operated by Finnair’s narrow-body Airbus fleet.

In addition, Finnair Gold and Platinum members will see their current 30-minute free browsing package upgraded to a 30-minute streaming package from January 2024. This initiative is designed to enhance the inflight experience for Finnair customers, allowing them to stay connected with family, friends, and business contacts while flying.

In conclusion, airlines are increasingly recognising the importance of inflight connectivity in enhancing passenger experience. By offering free wifi and messaging services, they are not only meeting customer expectations but also setting new standards in the aviation industry.
